This standard establishes minimum requirements for general-purpose steam turbines. These requirements include the basic design, materials, associated lubrication systems, control systems, auxiliary equipment, and accessories.
This standard applies only to general-purpose turbines. General-purpose turbines are horizontal or vertical turbines used to drive equipment that does not typically require redundancy, is relatively small in size (power), or is in a non-critical operating mode. They are typically used where steam pressure does not exceed 48 bar (700 psi) and temperature does not exceed 400 °C (750 °F), or where rotational speed does not exceed 6000 rpm.
This standard does not apply to special-purpose turbines. Special-purpose turbines are horizontal turbines used to drive equipment that does not typically require redundancy, is relatively large in size (power), or is in a critical operating mode. This category is not limited by steam conditions or turbine speed. Requirements for special-purpose turbines are defined in API 612.
